The two competing teams from the 2018 Rogers Western Hockey League Championship Series have made another deal.
Wednesday afternoon, the Swift Current Broncos traded the rights to overage import defenceman Artyom Minulin and an eighth-round selection in the 2021 WHL Bantam Draft to the Everett Silvertips. In return, the Broncos have acquired 17-year-old defenceman Alex Moar.
Minulin, a 20-year-old product of Tyumen, Rus. had been an instrumental piece of the Broncos success on the blue line for the past three seasons. Selected in the first round, 29th overall, by the Broncos in the 2015 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft, Minulin made his debut with the Broncos in the 2015-16 WHL Regular Season.
In 206 WHL regular season games, the 6-foot-2, 201-point Minulin has recorded 126 points (26G-100A), including nine power-play goals and four game-winning goals. Minulin has also appeared in 34 WHL playoff games, recording 15 points (3G-12A). Minulin was particularly effective as the Broncos made their run last season to capturing the third WHL Championship in franchise history.
“Minulin is a special talent who elevates the play of his teammates,” said Silvertips general manager Garry Davidson. “We’re excited to acquire his rights as a player eligible to fill a 20-year old slot and a vacant import slot with Peter Melcher currently unavailable to play.
“The role he’s excelled in as a high impact defenceman played a big piece in helping Swift Current win the WHL Championship last season, and was internationally recognized with playing time in the World Junior Championships.”
Moar, a 17-year-old product of Prince Albert, Sask. is headed back to his home province in the trade.
Selected in the fifth round, 102nd overall, by the Silvertips in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft, Moar made his WHL debut this fall and has appeared in four games with the Silvertips. Moar came to the Silvertips organization via the Prince Albert AAA Mintos. In 34 regular season games with the Mintos last season, Moar recorded 23 points (6G-17A) and added nine points (1G-8A) in nine playoff games.
“We would like to thank Arty for all his contributions to the team and the community,” said Broncos Head Coach & Director of Hockey Operations Dean Brockman. “He was a great player for our organization and wish him all the best. We’re excited to work with Alex and think he can be a very good player for us now and into the future.”
Minulin joins an organization that features former teammate Sahvan Khaira, who was acquired by the Silvertips during the summer.
The Broncos are back on the ice Friday, November 2 (7:00 p.m. MT) against the Lethbridge Hurricanes for their Bronco Strong Night. The Silvertips are on the ice Friday, November 2 (7:35 p.m. MT), playing host to the Tri-City Americans.
