• Former Prince George Cougar, Seattle Thunderbird and Moose Jaw Warrior Jesse Forsberg is the Canada West WHL Grad of the Month after helping the Saskatchewan Huskies to a 7-1-0 record in January
• He is the fourth recipient of the award this season after Alberta’s Jamie Crooks (October), Calgary’s Elgin Pearce (November), and Lethbridge’s Jay Merkley (December) also won the award

EDMONTON – Saskatchewan Huskies defencemen Jesse Forsberg is the Canada West WHL Grad of the Month for January, after posting 10 points in eight conference games to start 2017.

An Agriculture and Bio student, Forsberg helped propel the Huskies to a 7-1-0 record over the month, as the defending Canada West champions solidified their position atop the conference standings.

Now in his third season with Saskatchewan, the former Prince George Cougar, Seattle Thunderbird and Moose Jaw Warrior sits second in Canada West scoring with 27 points – four points behind Mount Royal Cougar Connor Rankin in the race for the Dave “Sweeney” Schriner Scoring Trophy.

With 11 goals and 16 assists, Forsberg is the only conference defender inside the top 20 in scoring and is nine points clear of Lethbridge’s Tim Campbell for the lead in Canada West defencemen scoring.

The Waldheim, Sask. native played 296 WHL regular season games and tallied 107 points over five full seasons of junior between 2009 and 2014.

Forsberg is looking to become the first Huskie defender to lead the team in scoring since Dave Dunn pulled off the feat during the 1969-70 season, and is currently one-point ahead of Logan McVeigh for the team scoring lead.

The other nominees for the WHL Grad of the Month award were: UBC Thunderbird Anthony Bardaro (former Prince Albert Raider), Clint Filbrandt of the Lethbridge Pronghorns (ex-Tri-City American), Manitoba Bison Adam Henry (former Lethbridge Hurricane), and Mount Royal Cougar Connor Rankin (ex-Calgary Hitmen).
