WHL Roundup: Hat tricks galore on Friday night

Entering week four of WHL action, four players potted a trifecta of goals on Friday night.
Four out of 10 ain’t bad.
A busy night in WHL action lent itself to some remarkable performances.

Second year forward Ty Lewis was named the game’s first star with a goal and an assist, but the Raiders prevailed on an overtime goal by fifth-year forward Austin Glover which marked his fifth of the season just 45 seconds into the extra frame.

The 2015-16 WHL Rookie of the Year has arrived in 2016-17, as Matthew Phillips notched his first hat-trick of the season and added an assist in a first-star performance on Friday night. Anaheim Ducks prospect Tyler Soy also picked up four points while Tyler Robertson picked up the lone goal for Edmonton. Goaltenders Griffen Outhouse and Patrick Dea combined to face 82 shots in the game.

WHL Goaltender of the Week Logan Flodell lived up to his billing as the Blades travelled west on Tuesday. The Regina native stopped 36 of 38 shots to defeat the home Kelowna Rockets while both Jesse Shynkaruk and Mason McCarty added a pair of goals for the Blades.

Regina Pats (5) Kootenay ICE (4) – OT
Regina (5-0-3-0) // Kootenay (1-5-2-1)
NHL Draft-eligible Nick Henry stole the show for the the Pats on Friday night with a trio of goals and one assist while Anaheim Ducks prospect Sam Steel potted three assists. Henry wasn’t the first star, however, as ICE goalie Payton Lee stopped 52 shots (yes, you read that right) in the defeat.

Vancouver Giants (4) Lethbridge Hurricanes (3) – OT
Vancouver (4-7-0-0) // Lethbridge (5-2-1-1)
Tyler Benson, a second round pick of the Edmonton Oilers, powered the Giants to their fourth win of the year with a hat-trick which included the overtime-winner on Friday night. On the Hurricanes’ side, Brayden Burke picked up three assists in the defeat to earn first star honours.

Mason Shaw and Chad Butcher each recorded two goals and an assist as the Tigers powered their way toward their sixth win of the season against their Central Division rivals.

USA-born Austin Pratt was the fourth player to register a hat-trick on Friday night as he earned the game’s first star to propel the Rebels to a fourth win. On the other side, 1997-born Jayden Halbgewachs continued to impress by adding two goals and an assist for 12 points on the year.

The Cougars picked up their early season roll on Friday as they popped a shootout win over the visiting T-Birds. Brad Morrisson picked up a pair of assists for the Cougars while Kody McDonald notched the shootout winner.

Another NHL Draft-eligible in Michael Rasmussen stole the show on Friday night in Kennewick as the 6’5″ prospect notched his ninth and 10th goals of the season in a three-point performance to guide the Ams. In eight games this season, Rasmussen’s 10 goals pace the League.
