NHL Draft chronicles: WHL history in the making

Regarded as the world’s finest development league for junior hockey players, the Western Hockey League has committed to developing professional hockey players since its existence. Dating back to 1967, the WHL has produced 308 players that were selected in the first round of the NHL Entry/Amateur Draft.

Among the most recent draft, notable names selected in the first round of the 2018 NHL Draft include Spokane Chiefs defenceman Ty Smith and Red Deer Rebels forward Alexander Alexeyev. Smith was chosen 17th overall by the New Jersey Devils and Alexeyev was selected 31st overall by the Washington Capitals. Other illustrious WHL Alumni selected in the first round in the NHL include defenceman Morgan Rielly, and forwards Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Jake Virtanen, and Leon Draisaitl.

While some of the most recent selections are still developing, the NHL Draft serves as an important milestone for WHL players to reach before taking the next step in their hockey careers. WHL Alumnus Carey Price, Seth Jones and Ryan Getzlaf have become household names for players to aspire to join in the NHL. Others well-known names include Scott Niedermayer, Mike Modano, Shane Doan and Jarome Iginla to name a few.

After nine WHL players were selected in the first round of the NHL Drafts of 2014, 2008, 2007 and 1995, and 10 players selected in the NHL Drafts of 1975 and 1982, the 2019 NHL Draft could again see as many as nine or more players also making WHL history. Notable prospects that could hear their names called on June 21st in Vancouver, B.C. include defencemen Bowen Byram, Lassi Thomson and Matthew Robertson, forwards Kirby Dach, Dylan Cozens, Peyton Krebs, Brayden Tracey and Brett Leason along with goaltender Mads Søgaard.

Of the 308 players drafted in the first round, there were eight selected first overall, the most recent being Ryan Nugent-Hopkins to the Edmonton Oilers in 2011. Of the top 10 picks in the last 44 years, almost 30% have come from the WHL, including the first seven overall picks in 1975. While the league has hosted some excellent forwards, the WHL remains known for defensive prospects, including 26 defencemen picked in the first round over the last nine years. Some notable defencemen include Jay Bouwmeester, Dion Phaneuf, Brent Seabrook, Braydon Coburn, Mike Green, Karl Alzner, Tyler Myers, Ryan Murray, Seth Jones and Wendel Clark. This year Byram could also join the list of WHL-defencemen greats if he becomes the first defenceman selected at the 2019 NHL Draft.
