CALGARY, AB. – The BOSTON PIZZA WHL Player of the Week is forward Matt Calvert of the Brandon Wheat Kings.
Calvert picked up 10 points, scoring four goals and six assists in three games to go with a +6 rating this past week, helping the Wheat Kings post a 3-0-0-0 record in that span.
On Tuesday, February 3rd, the Wheat Kings hosted the Red Deer Rebels at Westman Place in the Keystone Centre. Calvert scored one goal and added three assists as the Wheat Kings defeated the Rebels 5-0. He was also named the games 1st Star. On Friday, February 6th, East Division rivals the Prince Albert Raiders rolled into Brandon to face the Wheaties. Calvert picked up an assist as the Wheat Kings downed the Raiders 7-4.
The following evening, Saturday, February 7th, the Wheat Kings wrapped up their three game home stand hosting the Edmonton Oil Kings. Calvert netted his first career hat trick and added two assists as the Wheat Kings defeated the Oil Kings 6-1. His two power play goals, short-handed goal, game winning goal and five points earned Calvert 1st Star honours following the game.
Calvert’s 10 points over the last three games has him sitting sixth in team scoring with 46 points (16 goals, 30 assists) in 42 games. The Wheat Kings have won four straight games and 11 of their last 13 contests. With a record of 37-15-3-1 Brandon finds themselves just six points back of the Saskatoon Blades for top spot in the WHL East Division and second in the Eastern Conference.
Calvert, a 19 year-old forward from Brandon, Manitoba, is in his second season in the Western Hockey League with the Brandon Wheat Kings. During the 2008 NHL Entry Draft he was selected in the fifth round by the Columbus Blue Jackets.
