Thank you, Saskatoon: A look back at the Blades in the community
The Saskatoon Blades finished off the 2016-17 season with some memorable and meaningful games on the ice, and throughout the year participated in countless events with the wonderful people in our community.
It began with Merlin Ford Lincoln Thank You, Mr. Hockey Day on September 25, 2016, where the Blades paid tribute to hockey legend and Saskatoon native, Gordie Howe. SaskTel Centre also played host to several other theme nights throughout the year, including the Teddy Bear Toss on December 17, Team Up For Respect on January 30 and Welcome the World presented by Ecologik on January 22. In the community, the Blades were busy spending time with kids teaching them valuable life skills, such as partnering with the Lung Association and Conexus Credit Union for school visits, the Children’s Wish Foundation to deliver Christmas gifts to the Royal University Hospital and McNally Robinson to give away books and read to children.
It wasn’t just the kids learning new skills –the Blades entered the kitchen with Three Farmers Products for an “Iron Chef” inspired cooking competition involving set ingredients and having the players think quickly on their feet to make a tasty and creative dish for a panel of judges.
The Blades laced up the skates around the community stopping in to help out at minor hockey practices across the city, shinny at Lawson Heights Winterfest, giving out goodies at the Cameco Family Skate and taking in a homemade rink for the Home Depot Backyard Rink Contest.
The season wrapped up with one final farewell to the fans on March 17, 2017 for Merlin Ford Lincoln Fan Appreciation Night in front of over 10,000 fans at SaskTel Centre. A fantastic finale to an incredible season on and off the ice.
Thank you to all of our fans, sponsors, billets, volunteers, and local charities for making this season a special one. We look forward to reaching even bigger and better milestones next season; on and off the ice.
