Hurricanes’ Elmer inks three-year, entry-level contract with New York Rangers

Jake Elmer is going from the Bridge City to the Big Apple.

The New York Rangers signed the Lethbridge Hurricanes forward to a three-year, entry-level contract Friday.

Elmer is enjoying a career-best season with the Hurricanes, posting 78 points (38G-40A) in 66 games, including four power-play goals, six short-handed goals, and seven game-winning goals.

His productive season has been boosted by 21 multi-point games. He has one five-point game, eight three-point games, and 12 two-point games to his credit this season. He has six multi-goal games as part of those performances, including a pair of hat tricks.

Originally selected by the Regina Pats in the sixth round, 116th overall, at the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft, Elmer has played a strong role in keeping the Hurricanes in contention for the Central Division title this season. He ranks 15th in WHL scoring and fourth on the Hurricanes. His 38 goals lead the Hurricanes while he ranks in a tie for 11th in goals among all WHL players.

Elmer is tied for first in the WHL this season with six short-handed goals. His nine first goals, rank in a tie for second among all WHL players.

The 6-foot-1, 182-pound product of Calgary, Alta. has appeared in 202 WHL regular season games, posting 131 points (63G-68A). He has eight power-play goals, seven short-handed goals, and nine game-winning goals as part of his career totals.

Elmer scored the first goal of his WHL career as a member of the Kootenay ICE on November 26, 2016 against the Swift Current Broncos and would find his way to the Hurricanes the following season where he became an integral part of their offence.

Most recently, Elmer posted a 13-game goal-scoring streak, tying him for the longest streak in the WHL since the 1996-97 WHL Regular Season. Jeremy Williams of the Swift Current Broncos had a goal-scoring streak of similar length during the 2003-04 WHL regular season. Williams had 19 goals in his streak while Elmer had 17 goals.

For his WHL career, Elmer has 30 multi-point games, including one five-point performance, nine three=point games, and 20 two-point performances. He has nine multi-goal games for his WHL career as well.

Elmer was recently named the WHL On the Run Player of the Week for the week ending March 3, 2019.

Entering the final weekend of play for the regular season, the Hurricanes will play a pair of road games, beginning at The Centrium against the Red Deer Rebels on Friday, March 15 (7:00 p.m. MT).
