Team WHL Downs Russia in 2009 SUBWAY® Super Series Finale

Kelowna, B.C. – Kelowna Rockets’ forward Brandon McMillan scored in front of a home-ice crowd as Team WHL defeated Russia 4-2 to complete a CHL sweep of the 2009 SUBWAY® Super Series on Thursday night in Kelowna, B.C.
 
The victory follows Wednesday night’s 2-1 triumph for Team WHL over Russia in Victoria, B.C., and gives the CHL a 6-0 series win over Russia in the six-game series.  The QMJHL and the OHL each won both of their contests versus the visiting Russian squad.
 
Stefan Elliott of the Saskatoon Blades, Linden Vey of the Medicine Hat Tigers and Willie Coetzee of the Red Deer Rebels also scored for Team WHL, who scored three goals in the second period after the Russians built up a 1-0 lead after the opening frame.
 
Calgary Hitmen netminder Martin Jones made 16 saves for Team WHL, who outshot the Russians 39-18 in the contest.
 
Maxim Gorechisnikov and Maxim Kitsyn – with his fourth of the series – scored for Russia, who see their record fall to 5-37 through 42 all-time meetings versus the CHL in the seven-year history of the event.
 
Russian netmionder Igor Bobkov turned in another strong performance, turning aside 35 of 39 shots in the loss.
 
Bobkov was named the Russian Player of the Game while McMillan earned Player of the Game honors for Team WHL.
