ICE EDGE T-BIRDS IN O/T – Jesse Ismond scored the game’s only goal 3:54 into overtime to lift the Kootenay Ice to a 1-0 win over the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds in Western Hockey League action on Sunday, November 1st.
Todd Mathews turned aside all 24 shots he faced to record his first shutout of the season and the third of his career for the Ice (7-11-0-0), who win back-to-back games for the first time this season.
Calvin Pickard turned aside 33 of 34 shots he faced in a valiant effort for the Thunderbirds (4-11-1-2), who wrap up their Central Division trek with a 1-3-1-1 record in six games.
SILVERTIPS 2, OIL KINGS 1 S/O
Kellan Tochkin scored the only goal in a shootout to lift the visiting Everett Silvertips to a 2-1 victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings on Sunday.
Tochkin – with his fourth of the season – also scored the only goal in regulation for the Silvertips (9-4-0-0), who improve to 3-0 through the first three games of their Central Division road trip. Kent Simpson turned in a 37-save performance through three periods and overtime, and wasn’t beaten in the shootout to record his fourth win of the season.
Michael St. Croix notched his second goal of the season for the Oil Kings (7-9-0-3), who suffer their second straight setback. Cam Lanigan turned aside 38 of 39 shots he faced through regulation and overtime, but was beaten once in the shootout for the loss.
CHIEFS 3, WINTERHAWKS 0
James Reid turned aside all 34 shots he faced to record his first shutout of the season and backstop the visiting Spokane Chiefs to a 3-0 win over the Portland Winterhawks on Sunday.
Stefan Ulmer, Kyle Beach and Tyler Johnson scored for the Chiefs (7-6-1-0), who exact revenge on the Winterhawks after they defeated the Chiefs 2-0 in Spokane the previous night. Mitch Wahl and Blake Gal each drew two assists.
Kurtis Mucha turned aside 32 of 35 shots he faced in a losing cause for the Winterhawks (13-6-0-0), who see their five-game winning streak come to an end but remain tied for top spot in the U.S. Division.
BLADES 3, BRONCOS 1
Travis Toomey’s fifth goal of the season five minutes into the third period stood as the game-winner as the visiting Saskatoon Blades skated to a 3-1 victory over the Swift Current Broncos on Sunday.
Jyri Niemi and Gaelan Patterson also counted for the Blades (13-3-0-2), who stretch their winning streak to five games and have won 11 of their last 12 games, overall. Steven Stanford made 25 saves to improve to a perfect 5-0 since coming to the Blades from the Prince Albert Raiders.
Michael Stickland scored the only goal for the Broncos (9-8-0-1), who suffer their third straight setback to East Division competition. Morgan Clark made 23 saves in the defeat.
GIANTS 8, BRUINS 2
Rookie Lane Scheidl scored the first two goals of his WHL career while Craig Cunningham and Brendan Gallagher each notched a goal and two assists as the Vancouver Giants defeated the visiting Chilliwack Bruins 8-2 on Sunday.
Cass Mappin – with a goal and an assist – JT Barnett, Milan Kytnar and Sebastian Svendsen also scored for the Giants (11-4-1-2), who scored seven of their eight goals at even strength. Jamie Tucker made 19 saves to earn the win.
Ryan Howse and Brandon Manning scored for the Bruins (7-7-1-3), who see their three-game winning streak come to an end. Mark Friesen made 28 saves in the loss.
