Biography
Boychuk was drafted in the fifth round, 88th overall by the Hurricanes in the 2004 WHL bantam draft. He was the 2005-2006 recipient of the Carl Trentini Memorial award for Hurricanes Rookie of the Year. He has played for Team WHL at the ADT Canada Russia Challenge three times (2006, 2007 & 2008) he won a gold medal in 2006 as a member of Canada’s U-18 Junior World Cup team. Represented Canada at the U18 World Junior Hockey Championships, the 2007 Canada-Russia Super Series and was part of the gold medal winning U20 team at the 2008 World Junior Hockey Championships and an assistant Captain for the gold medal winning U20 team at the 2009 WJHC. He has participated in the 2008 Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Edmonton where he finished second in the Fastest Skater competition and was named the Team White Player of the Game. He was the recipient of the Lethbridge Hurricanes Boston Pizza Three Stars Award for 2007-2008 and led the WHL with 13 goals in the 2008 WHL Playoffs. This past summer, Boychuk was selected in the first round (14th overall) by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft – tying him with Brent Seabrook as the highest drafted Lethbridge Hurricanes player of all time.
Did you know? – Zach Boychuk came to Hurricanes camp and made the team as a 16 year old in 2005/2006 he weighed in at 155 lbs. After two years of training Boychuk now weighs in at a very fit 185 lbs. He also has a twin sister who is also an athlete – she is a high level gymnast who competes at the international level.
