BECOMING A SUPERSTAR
To become a superstar in sports business, you first need to know that it all begins with tickets.
Tickets are the lifeblood of sports teams. Once you learn tickets – and we truly mean, learn tickets – then it’s onto opportunities like selling sponsorships, becoming a sales manager, and beyond; but it all starts with tickets.
So, we start our people on our lifeblood. We don’t just give you the phone book and a pat on the back, then tell you to go sell. Our philosophy is to train, train, train, and when we get tired of that, train some more. We strive to expedite your growth as a salesperson. SUPERSTARS ARE BORN IN EDMONTON
The Edmonton Oil Kings play in the Western Hockey League, under the umbrella of the Canadian Hockey League – the premier development league of the NHL. The Oil Kings are owned by Oilers Entertainment Group, and play at Rexall Place, the storied home of the NHL’s Oilers. For the 2016-17 season, both teams will be moving into the state-of-the-art, 18,500 seat, Rogers Place in Downtown Edmonton.
WHAT IS THE JOB?
Tickets, remember, it’s all about tickets. You would be a full time salesperson making cold calls to local businesses to set up face-to-face meetings. The position will be selling corporate ticket packages, including season seats, partial plans, and group tickets to local businesses. We don’t expect that you will know how to sell our ticket packages right out of the gate, so we provide extensive training that begins with how to set up appointments with key decision makers, to recommending the best ticket package for each company.
Do you want to be a superstar in sports business? That is the first qualification we are looking for. Further, our ideal candidate will also possess strong verbal and written communication skills, be incredibly driven and goal oriented, be able to work long hours including nights and weekends, and finally, have a passion for sales and the sports industry. Previous sports sales experience is an asset. You will also need to have a valid driver’s license and access to a car so you can attend all the appointments you are going to make.
WHL MANAGER, EDUCATION SERVICES
The Western Hockey League (WHL), one of the World’s finest development leagues with 22 Member Clubs throughout Western Canada and the U.S. Pacific Northwest, is inviting applications for the position of WHL Manager, Education Services at their Calgary based WHL Office.
The WHL Manager, Education Services is responsible to manage and oversee the WHL Education and Scholarship program. Responsibilities of the position will include: managing the WHL Education Policies and Standards, including monitoring the academic progress of current WHL players; overseeing the administration of the WHL Scholarship program, including liaising with WHL graduate players and designated post-secondary institutions; coordinating the WHL Career Counselling sessions and managing the WHL Intranet communications system.
Candidates for the position should ideally have an academic counselling background and a strong knowledge and appreciation of the WHL Education and Scholarship programs. In addition, candidates should possess excellent communications and technical skills as well as being highly organized and administratively self-sufficient.
