WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE - Director of Communications

The Western Hockey League (WHL), one of the World’s finest development leagues with 22 Member Clubs throughout Western Canada and the U.S. Pacific Northwest, is inviting applications for the position of Director, Communications at their Calgary based WHL Office.

The WHL Director, Communications is a member of the WHL management team and is responsible to manage all aspects of the WHL Communications portfolio including media relations, the WHL website; social media platforms; WHL intranet; WHL broadcast agreements and other media partnerships; WHL publications; the WHL results system and other special projects.  

Candidates for the position should have experience in hockey or a related sports industry in the communications field.  In addition, candidates should possess strong inter-personnel skills, must be well organized and demonstrate an ability to manage multiple projects and have a working knowledge of website technology.  A post-secondary degree in communications, related field or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.  Experience in hockey, at a Club or League level, would be an asset.

Job Description:

  • Reports to the Manager of Communications

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Website/Digital Media

  • Assist Communications Manager with production of content and features
  • Interview, write, and edit stories for website on a weekly basis
  • Assist with WHL Images, Web graphics
  • Assist Director of Marketing with fulfilling web-related sponsorship requirements
  • Assist with weekly content for WHL e-newsletter and help WHL Club personnel coordinate their Newsletter sections
  • Assist Hockey Operations Assistant with WHL Statistics / Results, Club rosters, real-time scoring, and schedule
  • Assist Communications Manager & WHL Clubs with Leaguestat roster management & player profiles
  • Assist with content from WHL events as scheduled

Video

  • Video cataloging- maintain an archive of highlights, features, pictures and video for hockey operations department
  • Organize disciplinary actions for league archives and review purposes
  • Effectively plan and manage a spreadsheet to track videos, highlights, features for archive purposes
  • Assist with organizing video content for summer camps, features and online presentations.
  • Assist in managing and organizing disciplinary actions for regular games using appropriate software
  • Assist with the maintenance of NHL and WHL videos for review
  • Assist with downloading and transferring of files in an organized manor

Social Media

  • Support the monitoring, improvements, and content creation of the Western Hockey League’s social media feeds including, but not limited to Facebook, Twitter and YouTube
  • Assist with the implement a variety of social media initiatives and contests to increase visibility, membership and traffic across all digital mediums
  • Create and maintain a content editorial calendar.
  • Content Monitoring and Seeding: assist in monitoring key online conversations and events to ensure the brand is participating effectively, being well-represented and fans are being engaged
  • Research and Analysis: assist with basic research as needed in order to engage fans and to investigate any trending activities

Miscellaneous

  • Assist with production of WHL Media Guide
  • Assist with the coordination of media press conferences 
  • Provide support for media related events

Hockey Canada is a not-for-profit organization that creates leading-edge hockey development programs for its members to deliver in communities across Canada, provides consistent rules and regulations and various other membership services from coast to coast, manages numerous regional, national and international hockey championships and events, and leads the operation of all teams that represent Canada in international hockey competition. Hockey Canada’s mission is to “lead, develop and promote positive hockey experiences”.

About the Internships
The Ed Chynoweth Internships are made possible through a generous contribution from the Daryl K. Seaman Canadian Hockey Fund. The internship was established in 2011 following the passing of Ed Chynoweth, who served as the long-time president of the Western Hockey League and Canadian Hockey League, a director of the CHL, team owner, pioneer, and one of the most influential men in junior ice hockey in Canada.

The internships are based out of the 3 CHL offices (WHL, QMJHL, OHL) and Hockey Canada’s National Office. Stronger consideration is given to students currently enrolled or graduated from a discipline in sports administration, sport marketing, sport communication or program development and have previously played hockey in the Canadian Hockey League or with Hockey Canada Women’s National Teams program.

Primary Responsibilities:

Player Development and Recruitment

  • Assist with preparation and execution of WHL Combine Camps
  • Assist in preparation of WHL U.S. Prospects Camp
  • Conduct research on recruiting statistics and other player development
  • Assist with Alumni Relations
  • Implementation of data into the intranet system
  • Assist with the development of promotional materials relevant to WHL player recruitment
  • Manage WHL Prospects Central Website
  • Assist contractual obligations with hockey partners across Western Canada and the Western United States

Officiating Department

  • Administrative support

REGINA PATS - Director of Ticket Sales
The Regina Pats Hockey Club, Canada’s oldest junior hockey franchise, is in search of a dynamic, highly motivated and professional individual for the position of Director of Ticket Sales.

The successful candidate for the position of “Director of Ticket Sales” will be responsible for, but not limited to, all aspects of the development and implementation of ticket sales strategies. Responsibilities include maximizing revenues for the hockey club in areas of full & half season tickets, voucher packs and group ticket sales. Additional responsibilities include achieving sales quotas and management of the team’s customer data base.  The Director of Ticket Sales will also provide support to the Vice President of Business Operations in areas of customer service, corporate sponsorships, ticket package upgrades and customer relations.

Candidates for the position should hold a University/College degree majoring in a related field (Business, Marketing, Sales, Sport Marketing/Sales, Communications, etc.). Applicants should have sales experience, strong communication skills, experience with sales reporting, above average computer skills, the ability to work flexible hours and a strong work ethic. Experience in a related field would be an asset.
