Though both teams have feverishly worked throughout the season to be known as defensive-minded clubs, Monday’s lone meeting on the WHL schedule between the Tri-City Americans and Everett Silvertips was anything but.

An offensive slugfest between the two clubs was solved by a empty-net goal from Riley Sutter in the final minute, sending the Silvertips to a 6-5 victory Monday.

Matt Fonteyne had himself a career night, notching five assists for a career-best night for himself that also equaled a Silvertips record for assists in a game, but it was a game that Silvertips didn’t show their strongest hand in.

Leading 2-0 after 20 minutes on goals from Dewar and Sean Richards, the Silvertips allowed the Americans back in the game with goals coming from Jordan Topping and Nolan Yaremko in the first 2:21 of the middle period. The back-and-forth affair continued throughout the period.

Just past the midway mark of the second, Dewar notched his 21st of the season and second of the game, but the Americans came back 56 seconds later with the tying goal from Yaremko’s second of the game. Refusing to be deterred in their pursuit of two points, Patrick Bajkov tallied his 22nd of the season 92 seconds later, but the Americans once again came back with Isaac Johnson keeping the score even after 40.

The first goal of the third period didn’t come until the later stages, with Garrett Pilon (Washington Capitals) scoring his fourth goal in a Silvertips uniform one a one-time pass while on the man-advantage with 3:17 left in the game. Eager to protect their lead, the Silvertips added Sutter’s empty-netter, but still had things go down to the wire with Dylan Coghlan (Vegas Golden Knights) bringing Tri-City within one late.

Dustin Wolf stopped 35 of 40 shots to earn two points for his club while Beck Warm made 39 saves on 44 shots in the one-goal loss.

In all, nine players finished with multi-point performances Monday, led by Fonteyne’s five-point effort. Bajkov and Sutter each had a goal and an assist while Silvertips’ captain Kevin Davis added a pair of helpers.

Thanks to a five-game winning streak, the Silvertips have now opened up a two-point lead on the Portland Winterhawks for first place in the U.S. Division, though the Winterhawks will be eager to strike with three games in-hand on the ‘Tips.

The Silvertips will continue their four-game home stand Saturday, January 20 (7:05 p.m. PST), hosting the Brandon Wheat Kings. The Americans are back in action Wednesday, January 17 (7:05 p.m. PST), hosting the Swift Current Broncos to kick-off a four game home stand of their own.
