WHL Roundup: Estephan tallies four points as Hurricanes shutout ICE
Kootenay ICE (0) at Lethbridge Hurricanes (7)
Kootenay (18-18-3-0) // Lethbridge (17-17-3-0)
The Lethbridge Hurricanes brought the storm to the Kootenay ICE Tuesday at the Enmax Centre.
Giorgio Estephan scored a goal and added three assists for a four-point game, Jordy Bellerive (Pittsburgh Penguins) scored twice and Stuart Skinner (Edmonton Oilers) made 20 saves for his 10th career WHL shutout.
Bellerive got the scoring started on a late power play in the first period, scoring in the final five seconds of the period to put his team up by one after 20 minutes. Goals from Estephan and Jadon Joseph tripled the Hurricanes’ lead in the second, but the floodgates opened in the third.
Goals from Bellerive, Taylor Ross and Zachary Cox’s first career WHL goal in a 119-second span burst the game wide open, with Lane Zablocki (Detroit Red Wings) adding his second goal in a Hurricanes’ uniform later on in the period.
The explosion of offence was more than enough for Skinner, who stopped seven shots in the first, seven more in the second and six in the third.
Calen Addison, Igor Merezhko and Dylan Cozens each picked up a pair of assists in the victory. Zablocki and Joseph added assists to their goals to each finish with a pair of points. Egor Zudilov and Brady Pouteau each had one assist in the contest.
Colton Velos led the ICE with five shots.
