WHL clubs select 27 players in 2017 CHL Import Draft

 

Calgary, Alta. – Western Hockey League clubs selected 27 players as the 2017 CHL Import Draft was completed Wednesday, June 28.

The two-round draft took place online with the order of selection rotating through each of the CHL’s three leagues, using an inverse order of final regular season standings from the 2016-17 regular season. All CHL Clubs are permitted to carry two import players on their roster each season.

The Kootenay ICE held the top selection of all WHL Clubs, using the third overall pick to claim Swiss winger Gilian Kohler (2000) of EHC Biel. The 5-foot-10, 172-pound Kohler finished the 2016-17 season third in Swiss Junior A scoring with 51 points (9G-42A) in 43 games.

The Vancouver Giants were the second WHL Club to select, using the sixth overall pick to claim Slovakian centre Milos Roman (1999) of Frydek-Mistek HC. The 6-foot, 194-pound forward notched six points (4G-2A) in 29 regular season games with Frydek-Mistek HC in the second tier of Czech professional hockey.

The Prince Albert Raiders were the third and final WHL Club to select in the top 10 of the CHL Import Draft, using the ninth overall pick to claim German right winger Dominik Bokk (2000) of Kolner EC Jr. The 6-foot-1, 161-pound forward collected 71 points (34G-37A) in 41 games with Kolner EC Jr. of the German Junior League.

Three WHL Clubs (Saskatoon Blades, Calgary Hitmen, Swift Current Broncos) did not select a player in the 2017 CHL Import Draft.
