SILVERTIPS SHUT DOWN GIANTS – Daniel Cotton stopped 31 shots to record his second shutout of the season as the visiting Everett Silvertips skated to a 4-0 win over the Vancouver Giants in Western Hockey League action on Sunday.
Josh Winquist scored a hat trick, giving him 21 goals on the season, and Mirco Mueller also scored for the Silvertips (20-26-0-2), who scored twice on five power play chances as they earn their third win in a row, while Manraj Hayer chipped in three assists.
Payton Lee stopped 18 of 22 shots he faced in the loss for the Giants (12-36-0-0), who have dropped four straight decisions and have been shut out seven times this season.
TIGERS 3, REBELS 0
Cam Lanigan stopped all 26 shots he faced to post his third shutout of the season as his Medicine Hat Tigers managed a 3-0 win over the visiting Red Deer Rebels on Sunday.
Curtis Valk and Logan McVeigh each picked up a goal and an assist while Hunter Shinkaruk also counted for the Tigers (23-22-2-1), who put up their second consecutive shutout win after defeating the Calgary Hitmen 4-0 on Saturday.
Patrik Bartosak turned aside 36 of 39 shots he faced in a losing cause for the Rebels (25-20-3-2), who suffer their second straight setback but remain in fourth spot in the Eastern Conference.
OIL KINGS 6, COUGARS 1
Henrik Samuelsson scored twice and Stephane Legault tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Edmonton Oil Kings to a 6-1 victory over the visiting Prince George Cougars on Sunday.
Trevor Cheek and Curtis Lazar each got their 20th goals of the season while Edgars Kulda also found the net for the Oil Kings (31-11-2-3), who leapfrog idle Calgary into first place in the Central Division and Eastern Conference. Laurent Brossoit made 20 saves in the win.
Colin Jacobs scored the only goal for the Cougars (14-26-2-4), who went 1-for-9 on the power play as they drop their second decision in three nights on their Central Division tour. Brett Zarowny made 30 saves in the setback.
THUNDERBIRDS 6t, HURRICANES 5 S/O
Luke Lockhart scored the only goal in a shootout to lift the Seattle Thunderbirds to a 6-5 triumph over the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes on Sunday.
Connor Sanvido, Connor Honey, Andrew Johnson, Justin Hickman and Roberts Lipsbergs scored in regulation play for the Thunderbirds (18-26-2-1), who post their second straight victory after having lost 15 in a row. Brandon Glover made 31 saves in regulation, and wasn’t beaten in the shootout to record his 17th win of the season.
Michael Sofillas, Sam Mckechnie, Jamal Watson, Adam Henry and Jaimen Yakubowski scored and Macoy Erkamps had three assists in regulation play for the Hurricanes (22-21-1-6), who fall to 1-1-0-1 through three games of their U.S. Division tour. Ty Rimmer turned in a 54-save performance in regulation play, but was beaten one in the shootout to absorb the loss.
