COUGARS DOWN REBELS – Tate Olsen scored twice and Jordan Tkatch had three assists as the Prince George Cougars toppled the Red Deer Rebels 6-3 in WHL action at the Edmonton pre-season tournament on Saturday.
Jarrett Fontaine tallied a goal and two assists while Jake Mykitiuk, Joseph Carvalho and Brad Morrison also scored for the Cougars (1-0-0-0). Ty Edwards and Brett Zarowney combined for 19 saves to post the victory.
Jesse Miller, Dexter Bricker and Connor Bleackley scored for the Rebels (0-1-0-0), who led 2-1 after the opening period but allowed the next five goals en route to the loss. Grant Naherniak made 17 saves in the defeat.
HITMEN 3, TIGERS 1
Carson Samoridny scored a pair of goals to pace the Calgary Hitmen to a 3-1 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers in action at Edmonton, AB, on Saturday.
Travis Sanheim also scored for the Hitmen (1-0-0-0), who went 1-for-4 on the power play in the contest, while Chris Driedger turned in a 34-save performance to earn the victory.
Kyle Becker scored the only goal for the Tigers (0-1-0-0), who were held scoreless on six power play chances. Dawson MacAuley stopped all 11 shots he faced over the first half of the game for the Tigers, while Zach Robidoux allowed three goals on 13 shots in the second half to absorb the loss.
BRONCOS 8, OIL KINGS 2
Coda Gordon scored twice and set up two more while Tanner LeSann notched a goal and two assists to lead the Swift Current Broncos to an 8-2 drubbing of the Edmonton Oil Kings in other action at the Edmonton pre-season tournament on Saturday.
Brycen Martin, Erik Walker and Ryon Moser each tallied a goal and an assist while Bobby Zinkan and Graeme Craig also counted for the Broncos (1-1-0-0). Eetu Laurikainen made 24 saves over the first half of the game while Steven Myland stopped all 11 shots he faced over the second half to post the win.
Curtis Lazar and Edgars Kulda scored for the defending WHL champion Oil Kings (0-1-0-0), who outshot the Broncos 37-20 in the contest. Patrick Dea stopped 12 of 20 shots in the loss.
WINTERHAWKS 4, AMERICANS 1
Defenceman Keoni Texeira scored a pair of goals to pace the Portland Winterhawks to a 4-1 win over the Tri-City Americans in action at the Everett pre-season tournament on Saturday.
Dominic Turgeon and Jason Trott also scored for the Winterhawks (2-0-0-0), who earn their second win in as many days at the tournament. Jarrod Schamerhorn and Brendan Jensen combined for 31 saves in the victory.
Tyson Dallman scored the lone marker for the Americans (1-1-0-0), who went 0-for-6 on the power play in the game. Brenden Fiebelkorn and Luke Lee-Knight combined for 20 saves in the defeat.
SILVERTIPS 5, CHIEFS 1
Trent Lofthouse had a goal and an assist as the Everett Silvertips defeated the Spokane Chiefs 5-1 in other action at the Everett pre-season tournament on Saturday.
Stathis Soumelidis, Josh Winquist, Manraj Hayer and Reid Petryk also counted for the Silvertips (1-1-0-0), who scored the game’s first four goals en route to their first pre-season win. Austin Lotz stopped all 12 shots he faced over the first half to earn the win, while Andy Desautels stopped 14 of 15 shots over the second half.
Nakeh Lamothe scored the lone tally for the Chiefs (0-1-0-0), while Garret Hughson and Trevor Martin combined for 20 saves in a losing cause.
GIANTS 3, ROCKETS 2 S/O
Jackson Houck scored the deciding goal in a shootout as the visiting Vancouver Giants edged the Kelowna Rockets 3-2 on Saturday.
Dalton Sward and Reid Zalitach scored in regulation play for the Giants (1-1-0-0), who split their weekend home-and-home series versus the Rockets. Tyler Fuhr made 16 saves over the last half of the game, and was beaten just once on three Rockets’ shootout chances to post the win. Jackson Whistle made 11 saves over the game’s first half.
Rourke Chartier and Colton Heffley scored for the Rockets (1-0-0-1), who converted one of four power play chances. Jordon Cooke made 36 saves in regulation and overtime, but was beaten twice in the shootout to absorb the loss.
