The Red Deer Rebels took a bold step forward in securing their future Tuesday, signing their top four selections from the 2018 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft to WHL Standard Player Agreements.
All four players hail from the province of Alberta, with a pair from Calgary, one from Edmonton and another from Lloydminster. The group is led by forward Jayden Grubbe, the seventh overall selection in this year’s WHL Bantam Draft. The 6-foot-1, 181-pound forward captained the Calgary Bisons Bantam AAA team this season, recording 66 points (29G-37A) in 35 games, including 104 penalty minutes. In two seasons with the Bantam AAA Bisons program, Grubbe has 99 points (44G-55A) in 71 games.
Grubbe has added another 12 points (8G-4A) in 13 playoff games at the Alberta Major Bantam AAA Hockey League level. Grubbe earned a call-up to the CBHA Rangers Minor Midget AAA team, recording a pair of goals in one regular season game. He also added three points (2G-1A) in a pair of playoff games with the Minor Midget Rangers.
Also signed by the Rebels was defenceman Kyle Masters, selected in the first round, 16th overall, by the Rebels at this year’s WHL Bantam Draft. The Edmonton, Alta. product played for the Okanagan Hockey Academy Edmonton Bantam Prep team in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League this season, recording 24 points (7G-17A) in 29 games. The 5-foot-10, 139-pound Masters was also called up to play one game with the OHA Edmonton Elite 15s during the 2017-18 season.
The third player signed by the Rebels was Trey Patterson, the second of the two Calgary, Alta. products The defenceman was selected in the second round, 28th overall, by the Rebels. Also hailing from the Calgary Bisons Bantam AAA program, Patterson tallied 25 points (1G-24A) in 36 games, adding five points (1G-4A) in nine playoff games. Like Grubbe, Patterson also earned a call-up to the Minor Midget AAA level, recording one assist in four games with the CBHA Blackhawks Minor Midget AAA.
Rounding out the quartet of players signed to WHL Standard Player Agreements is forward Josh Medernach, a product of Lloydminster, Alta. who was chosen by the Rebels in the third round with the 50th overall selection. A teammate of Masters on the OHA Edmonton Bantam Prep team, Medernach recorded 36 points (16G-20A) in 30 games. Like Masters, Medernach was called up to play with the OHA Edmonton Elite 15s for a single game during the 2017-18 season.
All four players participated at the 2018 Alberta Cup earlier this year. With the signing of Grubbe and Masters, 16 of the 22 first-round selections from the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft have now signed WHL Standard Player Agreements.
