OIL KINGS DROP TO 1-1 IN ROUND ROBIN – The Edmonton Oil Kings suffered a 5-2 defeat to the Saint John Sea Dogs in round robin action at the 2012 MasterCard Memorial Cup tournament on Monday in Shawinigan, QC.

Zack Phillips scored a pair of goals for the Sea Dogs, who are the QMJHL champions and defending Memorial Cup champions, while Jonathan Huberdeau tallied a goal and an assist.

Kristians Pelss tallied his second goal in as many games for the WHL-champion Oil Kings, who fall to 1-1 in round robin action after beating the host Shawinigan Cataractes 4-3 in the tournament opener on Friday night.

Phillips opened the scoring for the Sea Dogs 4:23 into the game, but the Oil Kings tied it up less than three minutes later on Pelss’ second of the tournament, netted on the man advantage.

The Sea Dogs opened up a 2-1 lead on Huberdeau’s second goal of the tournament at the 4:02 mark of the second frame.  Danick Gauthier gave the Sea Dogs a two-goal lead at the 15:53 mark of the second period.

Stephane Legault would get the Oil Kings to within one goal again 1:03 after Gauthier’s goal, but that’s as close as they would get as Phillips – with his second of the night – and Ryan Tesink would tally in the third period for the Sea Dogs.

Mathieu Corbeil made 25 saves to earn the win for the Sea Dogs, who recover from Saturday’s loss to the OHL champion London Knights and now sit 1-1 in the round robin.

Laurent Brossoit turned aside 29 of 33 shots in the loss for the Oil Kings.

Edmonton has little time to dwell on Monday night’s loss as they hit the ice versus the Knights on Tuesday in their round robin finale.

With Monday’s result, all four teams boast an even 1-1 record in round robin play.
