Hitmen’s Malenstyn signs with NHL’s Capitals

Calgary Hitmen forward Beck Malenstyn has signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Washington Capitals.

Malenstyn, a native of Delta, British Columbia and Hitmen alternate captain, became the 54th player in Hitmen franchise history to be selected in the NHL Draft when the Capitals chose him in the fifth round, 145th overall, in 2016.

“On behalf of the Hitmen organization, we are extremely proud of Beck in signing his first pro contract,” said Mike Moore, General Manager and Vice President of Business Operations.  “He has worked very hard and improved significantly in each of his three seasons with our team.  It is terrific to see him rewarded for his commitment to hard work and excellence on and off the ice.”

Malenstyn recently completed his third full Western Hockey League season with the Hitmen, setting career highs in goals (32), assists (24) and points (56).  He wrapped up the 2016-17 campaign as one of the team’s leading scorers during the month of March, recording 12 points in 14 games including tallying his first career hat-trick.

Malenstyn, who helped Canada capture a gold medal at the 2015 U18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup, was selected by Calgary in the first round, 18th overall, in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft.

The alternate captain was a tremendous community ambassador this past season.  He received the club’s EllisDon Humanitarian Award for devoting a large amount of his time to giving back to agencies in Calgary and surrounding area.  In addition to helping Pucks for Paws raise over $12,400 for the Four Feet Companion Foundation, his largest commitment was a self-directed initiative that saw him volunteer at the Alberta Children’s Hospital.  Malenstyn interacted with hospital patients on Tuesday’s bingo night when time permitted on non-game days.
