Familiar foes exchange veterans as Broncos send Khaira to Silvertips for O’Rourke
Two familiar foes came together for an off-season deal Monday afternoon.
The Swift Current Broncos, winners of the 2018 WHL Championship, have traded 20-year-old defenceman Sahvan Khaira to the Everett Silvertips in exchange for 19-year-old forward Ethan O’Rourke and a third-round selection in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft.
“Sahvan Khaira is a welcomed and exciting addition to our blueline,” said Garry Davidson, general manager of the Silvertips. “His size and experience are valuable assets to our developing group, and he made a lasting impression during Swift Current’s post-season, which also caught our attention in the WHL Championship Series. He plays the game hard, simple, and honest. We’re looking forward to his contributions.”
Khaira – a 6-foot-4, 220-pound product of Surrey, B.C. – logged big minutes for the Broncos en route to winning the Ed Chynoweth Cup in May 2018. He skated in 26 post-season games during the 2018 WHL Playoffs, registering seven points (2G-5A), a minus-3 rating and 32 penalty minutes.
He enjoyed career regular season numbers in 2017-18 as well, notching 26 points (6G-20A) in 65 contests in Swift Current.

Originally selected in the ninth round (181st) of the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft by the Seattle Thunderbirds, Khaira is no stranger to the Pacific Northwest, having spent nearly two seasons in Kent, Wash., dressing in 77 WHL regular season games with the T-Birds spread across the 2014-15 and 2015-16 WHL seasons. He was then dealt to the Broncos in 2015-16 where he became a key cog on the blueline for head coach Manny Viveiros.
Additionally, Khaira’s older brother Jujhar spent the 2013-14 season in Everett where he collected 43 points (16G-27A) in 59 games as a member of the Silvertips.
Over the course of 245 career WHL regular season games, Khaira has 57 points (9G-48A), a plus-5 rating and 283 penalty minutes to his name.

“The Broncos would like to thank Sahvan for his services in Swift Current,” said Dean Brockman, head coach and director of hockey operations for the Broncos.
Meanwhile, it is O’Rourke heading to Swift Current. The 6-foot-5, 195-pound product of Penticton, B.C., logged 18 points (6G-12A) in 66 games last season, split between the Prince George Cougars and Silvertips. A former third-round selection (53rd) at the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft, O’Rourke added one goal in 18 WHL Playoff games during the Silvertips’ stellar post-season effort in 2018.
Over 86 career WHL regular season games, O’Rourke has 20 points (7G-13A) under his belt.
Khaira and the Silvertips open the 2018 WHL Pre-season on Friday, August 31 when they host the Tri-City Americans. Meanwhile, O’Rourke and the Broncos prepare to face the Regina Pats on Friday, August 31 to kick start their 2018 WHL Pre-season.
