The opening night of the 2018 Western Hockey League pre-season featured a single game as the Saskatoon Blades and Prince Albert Raiders renewed acquaintances at the Art Hauser Centre in Prince Albert, Sask.
Five different Blades tickled the twine in the victory, including import forward Kristian Roykas Marthinsen. It was Riley McKay who opened the scoring though, 7:45 into the opening period. Sergei Sapego would respond for the Raiders four minutes later, but Braden Plaschewsky restored the one-goal lead heading in to the first intermission.
The second period saw a single goal scored as the Raiders tied up the game on Justin Nachbaur’s first of the pre-season. They’d also take the lead in third, with Carson Miller scoring 10 seconds into the final period, but the Blades would stay in the game.
First, Roykas Marthinsen tied up the game on his goal while late goals from Tristen Robins and an empty-net goal from Michael Farren provided the difference in the contest.
Koen MacInnes stopped 36 of 39 shots in the victory while Brett Balas stopped 19 of 23 shots in the loss.
Majid Kaddoura picked up a pair of assists for the Blades while Zachary Ashton, Colton Dach, Ethan Mack, and Marek Schneider each contributed one helper.
Spencer Moe had a pair of assists in the contest for the Raiders, while both Nachbaur and Sapego earned assists for the multi-point effort. Aliaksei Protas also picked up an assist for the Raiders in the loss.
2018 WHL pre-season action continues Friday, August 31 with 10 games scheduled, including the Blades next pre-season date, coming against the Moose Jaw Warriors at the Brandt Centre in Regina, Sask.
