23 WHL prospects shortlisted for Hockey Manitoba’s 2019 Canada Winter Games roster

Hockey Manitoba’s pursuit of returning to the podium in men’s hockey at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alta. will be fueled by 23 Western Hockey League prospects.

The roster was released in June as part of the province’s 2018-19 Program of Excellence, which also includes U16 and U18 teams on the women’s side of the game.

This year’s preliminary roster for the province is led by defenceman Carson Lambos (Winnipeg, Man. / Kootenay ICE), the second-overall selection in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft. Also included is goaltender Tyler Brennan (Winnipeg, Man. / Prince George Cougars), and forward Eric Alarie (Winnipeg, Man. / Moose Jaw Warriors), the two other Manitoban-born players selected in the first round of this year’s WHL Bantam Draft. Of the 23 WHL prospects invited as part of the 29-player roster, 15 forwards, seven defencemen and one goaltender were included.

Manitoba’s eyes will be fixated on continuing their ascent up the Canada Winter Games standings, finishing third at the 2015 edition of the games in Prince George, B.C. Their roster at the time was led WHL standouts and future NHL Draft selections Cody Glass (Winnipeg, Man. / Portland Winterhawks), Josh Brook (Roblin, Man. / Moose Jaw Warriors), Brett Davis (Oakbank, Man. / Kootenay ICE), Jett Woo (Winnipeg, Man. / Moose Jaw Warriors), and Connor Dewar (The Pas, Man. / Everett Silvertips).

Davis led Manitoba in scoring at the tournament with seven points (3G-4A). Manitoba has enjoyed success in men’s hockey at the past three editions of the games, winning silver in 2007, placing fifth in 2011, and the aforementioned bronze in 2015.

The 2019 Canada Winter Games will be held in Red Deer, Alta. from February 15 to March 3, 2019.
