Here are the 2019 Western Hockey League Playoff scenarios for Friday, March 15.
The Vancouver Giants will clinch first place in the Western Conference:
If they defeat the Kelowna Rockets (7:30 p.m. PT/WHLLive.com) AND the Everett Silvertips lose in any fashion to the Victoria Royals (7:05 p.m. PT/WHLLive.com).
If the Giants earn a single point against the Kelowna Rockets AND the Everett Silvertips lose in regulation to the Royals.
The Giants currently lead the WHL’s Western Conference with 47 wins and 98 points through 66 games. The Silvertips have 46 wins and 96 points through 66 games.
In both scenarios, the Giants would hold a three-point lead against the Silvertips with each having one game remaining.
The Edmonton Oil Kings will clinch first place in the Central Division:
If the Lethbridge Hurricanes lose in regulation to the Red Deer Rebels (7:00 p.m. MT/WHLLive.com)
The Oil Kings have 40 wins and 88 points through 66 games. The Hurricanes have 38 wins and 86 points through 66 games. If Lethbridge were to lose in regulation Friday, they could still tie the Oil Kings based upon points but would lose on the first tiebreaker of wins. The Oil Kings last won the Central Division in the 2013-14 WHL Regular Season.
The Kelowna Rockets will clinch a spot in the 2019 WHL Playoffs:
If the Rockets win in any fashion against the Giants AND the Kamloops Blazers lose in regulation to the Prince George Cougars (7:00 p.m. PT/WHLLive.com)
The Rockets sit third in the B.C. Division with 27 wins and 62 points through 66 games. The Blazers sit fourth in the B.C. Division with 27 wins and 61 points through 66 games. Having already been eliminated from the Wild Card race, the Blazers are still in a strong contention for the final playoff spot in the B.C. Division.
With both teams tied at 27 wins and the Blazers holding the head-to-head advantage with a 6-3-1-0 record in the season series, the Rockets need to ensure they have more points than the Blazers by the end of the weekend.
The Red Deer Rebels will clinch a spot in the 2019 WHL Playoffs:
If they earn at least a single point against the Lethbridge Hurricanes (7:00 p.m. MT/WHLLive.com)
The Brandon Wheat Kings lose in any fashion to the Regina Pats (7:00 p.m. MT/WHLLive.com)
The Rebels have 33 wins and 72 points through 66 games. The Wheat Kings 30 wins and 68 points through 66 games.
Brandon currently needs a pair of wins and a pair of regulation losses by the Rebels this weekend to force a one-game tiebreaker for the final Wild Card spot. Based upon having more wins, the Rebels would host that tiebreaker game if necessary.
To date, 14 teams have secured their spot in the 2019 WHL Playoffs: Prince Albert Raiders, Everett Silvertips, Vancouver Giants, Portland Winterhawks, Saskatoon Blades, Spokane Chiefs, Edmonton Oil Kings, Victoria Royals, Tri-City Americans, Lethbridge Hurricanes, Calgary Hitmen, Moose Jaw Warriors, Medicine Hat Tigers, and the Seattle Thunderbirds. The Raiders, Giants, and Silvertips have each clinched their respective divisions while the Raiders have also secured the top record in the Eastern Conference and WHL, earning them the 2018-19 Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy as regular season champions.
